Back in the 90’s, the Bay Area basically had two publications everyone checked for. The glossy colored “4080″ which covered mostly hardcore Bay Rap, and a modest black and white magazine founded by Dave Paul Continue reading Bomb Hip Hop Compilation 1994

Rae & Christian “It Ain’t Nothin Like” Remix 12″

Photobucket

It’s been really dead lately for Hip Hop records that I can be motivated to spend money on, so as a result of my boredom I’ve been shopping on Ebay a lot (which I almost never do) and scouring the used Electronica and dollar bins for something interesting. So yesterday I came across this 12″ on the Grand Central label featuring The Pharcyde, and Kriminul (Jigmastas) in the used Electronica section of a local shop. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this one before-or if I have I never really noticed or cared all that much. But this record was worth the $2 price tag it had on it as it features solid vocals and equally solid production by The Nextmen-Whatever happened to the Nextmen? They had a bunch of really solid Hip Hop releases a few years ago then kind of ventured into reggae based broken beat records. But they were solid Hip Hop producers and had a lot of potential for greatness. Enjoy.

Kev Brown “Versatility Joint”

Kev Brown has to be one of the most under appreciated MCs/Producers in Hip Hop right now. He’s got some of the illest beats around laced with mellow guitar loops, horns, and some of the fattest basslines on the planet. And for that, it has always been refreshing to me when I hear his music. How can you front on that? Check the videos.

My Michael Jackson Billie Jean 12″ Must Be Worth $3000-At Least!

Photobucket

The death of Michael Jackson shocked the world last week. And since then, we’ve seen a number of online Michael Jackson tributes via dedicated mixes from various DJs. And this is just the beginning. We’ve seen it everytime a musician passes away when before people could care less. Record companies now see dollar signs when there’s a death in the musical family and start releasing special box sets, Best Of CDs, DVDs, unreleased material, books, anything and everything they can to make some loot. It’s a funny thing cause like suckers we buy into it everytime.

Even funnier when you start to see postings on ebay and craigslist from people outrageously pricing Michael Jackson albums that consistantly sold between $1 and $5 dollars since their release. On my local Craigslist I found people asking $500 for an original “Off The Wall” LP, Or $1500 for a “Thriller” LP ?? hahaha. I know times are rough, but that’s highway robbery. You know how many “Thriller” albums were pressed up and sold!? What was it like $140 Million copies?…I guess that’s rare. How To Fix Warped Records

Unfortunately there’s no definitive answer on how to fix a warped record. I wish there was but there isn’t! Why? Because I think there are too many potential hazards in applying heat to any vinyl record. I find some records, no matter how much you bend them back and forth just won’t flatten. Maybe the properties of that vinyl mixture or pressing just won’t allow any change. And some records will flatten quite easily with some bending back and forth in your hands. No problem.
So it’s really a huge gamble if you try to apply heat to a record-any record! Continue reading How To Fix Warped Records

Bay Area Artist: Raw Soul

I’ve been meaning to post this record for a while now since I know next to nothing about these guys. And this EP right here released as a promo on Soul Kids Productions back in 1996 was one of my favorite releases at that time. And back then, most underground/unsigned Hip Hop out of the Bay Area was still being released on cassette, i.e. The Mystic Journeymen, Grouch, Hobo Juction, etc, so it was pretty unusual for a vinyl release like this one to surface. Unfortunately the only information I have on these guys was that they were Fillipino MCs from the San Francisco area. That is it! The record itself only lists art credits by local graff artist Crayone, and a phone number for bookings. If anyone has more info on these guys please let me know. I’d like to find out more information on this record, the group, and if they released any other material previous to this release or after. Check it out.

RJD2 Wins Film & Television Award

RJD2 is known for his elaborate production skills and funky drum programming on the MPC. And he’s definitely no stranger to his beats appearing in various tv commercials. But I didn’t even know about a theme he constructed for a show called “Mad Men”-never seen it! But I’m impressed with his theme music! And how many Hip Hop producers out there can say they won an award for a television theme? That’s next level son! Gongrats! Check it out.

MF DOOM “Born Like This” LP

Photobucket

I’ll give props to Lex records for their their packaging! They always seem to take their packaging to the next level with their vinyl releases making them that much more interesting and collectable. And I especially loved what they did with the Dangerdoom Deluxe double LP a few years back with the interchangeable pixelated color sleeves. That was really dope-Oh yeah and the music is pretty good too. What else can I say? Doom delivers more of what we come to expect from the man behind the mask. Recommended.

Lakers Fans Loot Consignment Sneaker Shop!

I know this isn’t music related but I found it interesting since I’m also into sneakers. And some of you might remember a few years back out here in the Bay Area when Oakland fans rioted and destroyed businesses in the neighborhood near and around the Coliseum when the Raiders lost a game-you’d think they’d be used to that by now though right!? But come on, Continue reading Lakers Fans Loot Consignment Sneaker Shop!

Thes One’s Movie Score For Rob Dyrdek’s “Street Dreams”

I don’t really know how well this movie is gonna play out when it’s finally released-cause let’s face it these movies tend to be a little cheesy to tell you the truth. But at least the trailer looks pretty decent, so I couldn’t tell you. But now that I’ve learned Thes One is involved with the soundtrack for the film it’s become more of a possibility that I might check it out for myself. Thes One’s beats are dope, no doubt and it’s interesting to listen to him talk about his approach to creating music for the film. All I want to know now is, will we see a vinyl release for his portion of the music? We shall see. Check it out.

Street Dreams is in theaters this month.
